An easy trail, about 1.5 miles round trip. Beginning behind the gift shop, go east across the creek towards two distinctive peaks on the sky line. After crossing the open fields you will traverse a brushy wash ( sometimes has running water ) and then go up into the badlands. Here you can enjoy the interesting formations, numerous side canyons, or climb the mud hills for an elevated view of the countryside. You will find numerous veins of gypsum running through the clay hills, which are sediments that settled out of China Ranch Lake, an ancient freshwater lake dating back approximately ten million years. In some places, these eroded sediments have been measured to be over a thousand feet thick. One particular canyon leads to a seep and a clump of wild date trees. Can you find it?
